Geo-economic risks becoming a new argument for industrial policy? EtlaTalks-webinar

The new era of geopolitics and geo-economics is significantly changing the economic landscape and operating environment in which we live. ETLA Economic Research organised a webinar on 14 February 2025 on geopolitics and industrial policy with keynote speakers Dr Cinzia Alcidi from CEPS-Centre for European Policy Studies and Professor Hubertus Bardt from the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft IW.

It is evident that industrial policy and international trade barriers are increasingly influencing the location of investment decisions. These trends challenge the foundations of the international division of labor.

ETLA Economic Research provides a comprehensive overview of the key drivers, assumptions, and policy actions driving these changes. Our latest report (in Finnish) provides recommendations and key principles for a small open economy, such as Finland, on how to navigate the changing landscape.

On February 14, 2025, ETLA Economic Research hosted a webinar/online workshop on geopolitics and industrial policy, featuring keynote speakers Dr. Cinzia Alcidi, Head of the Economic Policy and Jobs & Skills Unit at CEPS-Centre for European Policy Studies, and Professor Hubertus Bardt, Managing Director of the Institut der deutschen Wirtschaft IW.

Dr. Alcidi’s presentation focused on recent developments in EU industrial policy. Professor Bardt provided an update on the state of German industry and industrial policy.

Dr. Jyrki Ali-Yrkkö, a Research Director at ETLA Economic Research, presented recent research results on the topic of “Are geo-economic risks becoming a new argument for industrial policy?”

The event was hosted by Tytti Sulander, Head of Communication at Etla Economic Research.
