The carbon competitiveness of Finnish production and its development

The aim of this research project is to better understand the development of emission intensity (greenhouse gas emissions/value added) in different industries, to examine Finland’s carbon competitiveness in the European context, and to use this information to prepare more accurate environmental forecasts. In particular, the key focus of the project is improved precision in measuring the development of emission intensity. International comparison offers an important perspective and indicates the carbon competitiveness of production in Finland. The importance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the competitive global marketplace is increasing.

Etla publishes an annual forecast of the development of Finland’s greenhouse gas emissions in connection with Suhdanne its twice yearly publication examining macroeconomic trends in the Finnish economy.

The project uses industry-specific greenhouse gas emission statistics for the years 2008–2020 as published by Eurostat, combined with the value-added statistics of specific industries in calculating the emission intensity of production.
