Education and Inclusive Growth

The Academy of Finland’s Research Council for Culture and Society has granted Hanna Virtanen, a chief research scientist at Etla, Academy Research Fellow funding. The four-year project “Education and inclusive growth” begins in September 2023. Academy Research Fellowship funding is intended for early-career researchers on a fast career track who have formed international networks and who are conducting scientifically high-quality and high-impact research that contributes to scientific renewal.

The project provides new and significant information on the importance of education to promote inclusive growth in times of profound occupational restructuring. We focus on two distinct themes relating to the role of education in shaping the foundations of the society:

  • how are different schooling paths able to provide skills to match the changing requirements at the labor market, and
  • what is the role of education choices and institutions in shaping social connections and cohesion.

The project adds to prior work by exploiting strong causal designs, quasi-experiments and randomized experiments, to bring new insights into the cost-effectiveness of adult education investments and to the relevance of vocational education in the future. Furthermore, it exploits the exceptionally rich administrative dataset to tie together various non-productive returns to education, thus helping to paint the big picture regarding education and inclusiveness of society.
