Is it worth investing in adult education?

Hundreds of millions of euros are spend on adult education in Finland each year. In Finland it is hardly known whether adult education is improving employment, adapting to job revolution or development of earnings.

This project is extensively exploring the impact of participation on adult education on employment and income. Research will focus on those over the age of 25 who have already been in working lifet and are starting a new degree in 2000‒2013.

The main questions in this project are:

  • What is the impact of adult qualification on employment and income at the individual level?
  • How do the effects on employment and income depend on the type of qualification, degree or area of education?
  • How do the effects on employment and income depend on starting occupation?

Based on the results of this project, the economic viability of adult education can be calculated, the importance of adult education in ensuring the availability of skilled labor and the effectiveness of adult education in adapting to changes in vocational structures can be assessed.
