The research project combines a macroeconomic review of R&D policy with research on innovative companies and individuals. The project provides an overview of the literature on the effects of public R&D funding and examines the effects of public funding on the distribution of R&D personnel between new and old companies.
The project distinguishes between the shares of continuing, entering, and exiting companies in changes in R&D activity and analyzes the link between the R&D activity of start-up companies and the funding granted to it in terms of the number of innovations.
In addition, the characteristics and career paths of successful innovators are analyzed. This improves understanding of the impact of corporate R&D activities on the rest of the economy. The study examines the importance of educated foreign labor in innovation investments (such as R&D) and innovation outcomes (such as product innovations). This will help identify strategies for maximizing the innovations produced by educated immigrants.
The project will produce research-based policy recommendations that will enable decision-makers to improve the distribution of public R&D support and R&D personnel among companies, thereby promoting innovation-based economic growth in Finland
Etla is implementing the project in collaboration with The Labour Institute for Economic Research LABORE, which is responsible for the project.
