The manufacture of electronic devices and service infrastructures for digital applications are mainly located outside Finland. Over time, an understanding has emerged, for example, of how the value of electronic device manufacturing is distributed globally across different supply chains. On the other hand, there is little information on what and how much energy and electricity is used for procurement in different value and supply chains, i.e purchased inputs, the manufacture of electronic equipment and the maintenance of digital application infrastructures. We also do not know how the energy uses of digital application service infrastructures are distributed in different parts of the supply chains and geographically. In addition, we know little about greenhouse gas emissions in the ICT sector.
The aim of this research project is to investigate the climate impact of the ICT sector from the perspective of value and supply chains. The project focuses on understanding the value chains of the ICT sector and their use of energy and electricity, especially from the perspective of service infrastructures for electronic devices and digital applications. The project also includes a literature review related to the topic.
