Abstract

This report outlines findings of the RoboÄly project (Public-sector development needs for robotic process automation and artificial intelligence – development needs of robotics and artificial intelligence from the perspective of information infrastructure). The report examines robotic process automation and artificial intelligence applications in the public sector. The report also describes the technical requirements for applying artificial intelligence (and especially machine learning) in the public sector as well as information security and data protection considerations that need to be taken into account in the application of robotic process automation and artificial intelligence. Furthermore, the report sets out the selection criteria for identifying tasks or (public-sector) processes that are suitable for robotic process automation or artificial intelligence and ways to evaluate the benefits of robotics and artificial intelligence projects. The report includes two case studies from the City of Oulu: one relating to robotic process automation and one relating to artificial intelligence. The report also includes suggestions of development actions to support the exploitation and promote the use of robotic process automation and artificial intelligence in the public sector.
