The programme’s principal research themes relate to labour market institutions and pay systems (with special focus on performance-related pay schemes), the structure and functioning of the labour market, as well as human capital, skills and evaluation of education policies.
A central topic is the evolution and implementation of new types of performance-related pay schemes and their impact on employees and employers in terms of wage structures (e.g. wage dispersion, worker performance and pay equality) as well as productivity and profitability performance. Special attention is paid to comparing the development and impact of these new pay schemes in manufacturing and services (both private and public). Another key topic relates to the functioning of the labour market with the emphasis being on labour market institutions (including active labour market policies), as well as the composition and dynamics of the workforce in terms of skills, age, mobility, career, and job satisfaction. The programme also seeks to assess the impact of both youth and adult education (especially employer-provided training) on the performance of individuals, companies and the society as a whole. All analyses are undertaken using broad longitudinal databases compiled by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) and by Statistics Finland.
Dr. Rita Asplund is the research director of the “Labour market and education economics” research programme. The programme’s head of unit is Dr. Antti Kauhanen.
